It’s been four years since the last standalone Thor film, and it seems clear that Marvel is hoping to make Thor: Ragnarok so ambitiously epic that it will have been worth the wait. The movie will separate Thor (Chris Hemsworth) from his hammer Mjolnir; his homeworld Asgard faces destruction from the Goddess of Death; and he’ll have to fight a gladiator battle against the Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo).

It’s not exactly clear, yet, how the characters will get from Point A to Point B in the complex plot, which also includes interactions with the evil Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), Skurge The Executioner (Karl Urban), and Asgardian goddess Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson). A search for Odin in New York City will include a collaboration with Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), as teased in the Sorcerer Supreme’s own film, which also indicated Thor would be teaming up with his dangerous brother Loki.

Thor will likely have a lot of questions for his throne-stealing brother when they meet up again. As actor Tom Hiddleston explains to IGN, in the video you can watch above, Loki’s not going to give a lot of satisfactory answers and “hammers are involved.” All sibling rivalry goes out the window, however, when the “stakes are raised” by Hela (Cate Blanchett), the aforementioned Goddess of Death.

Some concept art for Thor: Ragnarok showed the two brothers facing off against Hela, and Hiddleston explains that Thor and Loki cling to that familial bond once they’re confronted with a being who can wield destruction “on a scale of terror that they have never ever seen before.” When two gods with giant egos get scared, it’s not surprising they would set aside even the most serious of disagreements to try and defeat this devastating new enemy.

We know from the comics that Hela is the biggest of Big Bads, with powers like killing anyone – including Asgardians – with a single touch, and stealing their souls. A glimpse of some Hela stuntwork for the upcoming film also shows some seriously agile moves that will make escaping that deadly touch pretty difficult.

Loki has always been one of the most entertaining villains in the MCU, and it should be fun to see how he reacts to such a formidable foe. Hiddleston and Blanchett have both talked about director Taika Waititi injecting more humor into the Thor universe, and all the layers of “brotherhood,” deception, and estrangement between Thor and Loki should be an ideal situation for the flashes of sarcastic banter the Marvel movies are known for.
