Following her two public breakups, The Hills: New Beginnings’ Kaitlynn Carter opened up in a series of Instagram Stories about how she “was not OK,” and she shared advice on how others can cope with heartbreak.

In early August 2019, the news broke that Kaitlynn Carter and husband Brody Jenner were calling it quits just one year after their non-legally binding marriage ceremony in Bali. The couple’s relationship had been a hot topic during the first season of The Hills: New Beginnings, where viewers saw Kaitlynn and Brody debate things like when they wanted to start having children and rumors circulated about whether the couple was involved in a polyamorous relationship, so their breakup didn’t come as a complete surprise to fans. Just weeks after her split from Jenner, Kaitlynn began a whirlwind 6 week romance with Miley Cyrus before the pair broke up due to their relationship becoming too serious too quickly. Kaitlynn has seemed to recover from her two public relationships, and now she’s opening up about she managed to get to where she is today.

In a Q&A on her Instagram Stories (via Us Weekly), Kaitlynn responded to a fan that asked if Carter wished her relationship had worked out with her musician ex-husband, clarifying that in her mind, “things DID work out with us. Not romantically, but we are better friends now than ever and if there’s one thing I feel super proud of lately it’s how we handled our split.” Carter also responded to a fan who asked for breakup tips from the 31-year-old because Kaitlynn said that is “the DM I get the most by far.” Kaitlynn wrote that following her breakups, she was “not OK or thriving AT ALL for a while” and she said that despite staying busy because of her career and the need to keep her social media updated, “when I was alone I was very sad and in my head about all of it.” Kaitlynn went on to share some of the things that helped her most, one of which includes “NOT TRYING TO DATE” because she knew that “dating before I’m ready would’ve made things so much worse cause I would’ve just been trying to replace someone else and ended up disappointed.” She acknowledges that for some people, it helps them to date right away, but she believes it’s “key to take as much time as you can to get comfortable completely on your own so that when you do date some new you’re not dragging baggage into that relationship.”

Of the several tips she shared on her Instagram Stories which included finding a creative outlet, as well as “practicing understanding and compassion,” the last and most important one she highlighted was to “RESIST posting emotional stuff” on social media, whether that’s pictures, quotes, or memes. She even suggested you “delete social media for a while if you can’t resist” because “you’ll never regret NOT posting something to IG but there are definitely things to regret when you post too much lol.” Kaitlynn suggests you “call your friends/write in a journal and keep it to yourself,” and even though it might be difficult at the time, “you’ll be sooo happy you didn’t do it later.”

Despite the two heavily scrutinized breakups she’s gone through this year, Kaitlynn really does seem to be doing well and seems to be at a happy stage in her life. Fans of the show are happy to see her thriving, and though she is no longer with the DJ, Jenner confirmed that Kaitlynn will be apart of season 2 of The Hills: New Beginnings, and that their split will be a focus for the season, so viewers can look forward to learning more about what went down and where Kaitlynn Carter is at in her life now.
