The DC Extended Universe could change dramatically upon the release and success of Margot Robbie’s next Harley Quinn movie, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Warner Bros. and DC Films finally found the right project to bring back Robbie’s Harley Quinn after she proved to be the best part of Suicide Squad. She’s once again going to be part of a team, but this time it will mean joining forces with Huntress and Black Canary instead of Task Force X.

Birds of Prey is going to be a female team-up movie that stars Robbie alongside new additions Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell, who play Huntress and Black Canary respectively. WB already provided fans with an early look at the film with a quick teaser of the entire cast doing camera tests in their costumes right as production began. This early footage helped establish some expectations with fans as to what director Cathy Yan is planning to do with Birds of Prey, and it is possible that she’ll shake up the DCEU by the time the film ends.

In the latest Screen Rant video, we look at how Birds of Prey could potentially change the DCEU as it moves forward. The team-up film won’t hit theaters until next year, but there’s already some information available about the state of the DCEU and the main characters when the film will begin.

These possible changes to the DCEU all look likely to happen, even if they aren’t made explicitly clear by the end of Birds of Prey. One of the reasons the film is already highly anticipated is the possibility of more female DC characters getting their chance on the big screen if this film turns into a franchise. The DCEU’s future may very well be female, especially as they’ll beat the MCU to the punch of having two female-led films in a single year. If both Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman 1984 are the hits many expect them to be in 2020, then the reported futures for Batgirl, Supergirl, Zatanna, and Ava DuVernay’s female-led New Gods could become all the more likely.

When it comes to the changes to what came before, Birds of Prey could also signal some sort of an end for Batman, or at the very least a break in his modern day appearances. Matt Reeves is recasting the character for a younger lead instead of bringing back Ben Affleck, and Birds of Prey teases that Batman is no longer active in Gotham. This could allow Harley and the Birds of Prey to step up and be the city’s new protectors. Additionally, set photos from filming have indicated that Harley has left Jared Leto’s Joker behind, which could mean the end of his portrayal. These are but a few changes Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) could make to the DCEU, so additional alterations could be revealed upon the film’s release.
